Employment Report: Bachelor of Science Graduates

Main content start

A career path is exactly that—a journey. The BS degree is one stop along the way.

Internships are early waypoints

MS&E students intern across a wide range of industries and roles as they explore career avenues, as the two charts below demonstrate. At this beginning stage of the journey, exploration is key: to help discover areas of interest and fit, and—just as importantly—realize areas that aren't, for whatever reason. We encourage students to step outside of comfort zones and try something that is a stretch, or completely different to what they might have done before or think they're interested in. Best case scenario, it's an epiphany. Worst case, it's a less enjoyable 8-12 weeks. Either way, there will be growth and learning.

Moving into a full-time career

Pie chart showing over 50% "yes", 38% "no", and 10% "not applicable"
Did undergraduates accept a full time employment offer from an organization they had previously interned at? (*n/a means attending graduate school). Data from the past two academic years (2022-23 and 2023-24) collected via a voluntary survey; n=29.

Assuming a mutual understanding of interest and fit, internships can be an excellent lead into a full-time position after graduation. On the flip side, plenty of graduates start their full-time careers with a different organization or in another industry.

MS&E graduates launch careers in a range of different industries and have various job titles. The first job after graduation is exactly that—the first job. We recommend listening to our podcasts and reading our featured Stories and Voices for examples of the career journeys that our alumni have started and experienced. Current students and alumni can also attend our career events with quarterly informal "Career Chat" conversations.
